Code of Professional Conduct
Where a member is also a member of another healthcare profession they must also comply with the
code of conduct relating to that other profession. In any case of conflict between this code and that
code the more onerous provision shall prevail.
1) Members shall at all times exercise their professional skill and judgment to the best of their
ability, with integrity and with full regard to the public interest.
2) Members must uphold and enhance the good standing and reputation of the profession.
3) Members have a duty of care towards their patients and must at all times take care to ensure
that their actions do not result in any avoidable danger or injury to any person.
4) Members are ethically and legally obliged to protect the confidentiality of patient information
acquired through their professional duty unless there is a legal requirement to do otherwise.
5) Members must identify and acknowledge any limitations in their training and competence
6) Members must maintain and develop their professional knowledge and competence
7) Members are legally responsible and accountable for the results of their professional actions
caused by act, negligence, omission or injury.
8) Members shall take reasonable steps to ensure that persons working under their authority are
competent to perform the tasks assigned to them and shall accept responsibility for any work
done under the authority delegated to them.
9) Members shall not recklessly or maliciously injure, or attempt to injure, whether directly or
indirectly, the professional reputation of another Member.
10) Members must pay due regard to the way in which they accept remuneration for their
professional services.
