IMPORTANT CPD INFORMATION FOR ACCREDITED VASCULAR SCIENTISTS
January 2006

It is imperative as a profession of high level accreditation, that we maintain our
standards. This we do with Continued Professional Development (or CPD). You need
to be able to refer to the documents below so if you do not have these already please
read and/or download them from the SVT website.

“Accreditation Document” “CPD point list” “CPD record sheet”

It is mandatory for all accredited clinical vascular scientists to meet the requirements
for practice, collect points through different educational activities, and have
membership of the SVT to maintain their accredited status (please refer to current
accreditation document, pages 7 and 8 for details).
Please remember – “failure to maintain CPD points or sufficient practical skills can
result in removal from the Accredited Vascular Scientist professional register”.

Continued Professional Development Portfolio

What should I keep in my portfolio?
♦ You are required to keep all evidence of meetings, papers, professional skills
and development etc. together, to hand, and up to date, as proof of CPD
activity for the last 3 years, to comply with the requirements of the
accreditation document. A minimum of 30 CPD points needs to be accrued
over this period. Should you be requested to show any of these documents, at
any time they must be available. N.B. This is your responsibility and each
year a sample of AVS’s records will be checked. (*new AVS’s see below)
♦ A CPD record sheet should be used to make it easier to keep up to date with your
activities for each year. On this sheet, you need to write the date and description
of each activity meriting CPD points (please refer to CPD point list document),
and have this signed and dated each time by a line manager or another AVS. The
CPD record sheet can be downloaded from the SVT website.

CPD Database

The annual CPD interval date is 1st September. At the end of any year, you will need
to have amassed a total of 30 points for the previous three years. You need to send a
copy of your CPD record sheet each September to the CPD coordinator to update the
database. (*new AVS’s see below).

(*New AVS’s have one year post accreditation where no points need to be formally
accrued. From one year post accreditation, points should be collected so that by the
end of four years post accreditation, a total of 30 points has been amassed for the
previous three years.)

Declaration
At renewal of SVT membership (September), part of the renewal form requests a
declaration from all accredited clinical vascular scientists to state that you have met
your requirements for continued professional development, as set out in the
Accreditation Document.

CPD update
Every year, after membership renewal lists have been completed (February), AVS’s
will get a personal, updated CPD history which shows the last completed CPD point
year, and the next September interval date with the remaining number of points for
collection until then. Hopefully it will be self-explanatory. Obviously some
circumstances (e.g. sick leave etc.) may prevent collection of points. If this applies to
you, please write as soon as possible to the CPD co-ordinator. The education
committee will deal with each query on an individual basis.

Clear as mud? Here is a summary

Quick checklist
♦ 1st September – Annual interval date for CPD points as a rolling total of 30 CPD
points over the previous three years.
♦ September - CPD record sheets to be sent to CPD co-ordinator in September of
each year so that database may be updated. Please do not send in all evidence of
attaining CPD points unless requested to do so – just a copy of CPD record sheet
♦ September – Renewal of membership with declaration to confirm that AVS
criteria has been met for the previous year
♦ February – Final list of Accredited Vascular Scientists compiled
♦ February - End of year CPD history sent to each AVS
♦ Continuous - All Accredited Vascular Scientists keep a portfolio of
Continuing Professional Development, summarised on a record sheet.
