About the SVT

Post  Admin on Mon Dec 03, 2007 5:16 pm

The Society for Vascular Technology (SVT) was formed in 1992 to advance non-invasive vascular diagnostic services by promoting training and research in Vascular Technology and to disseminate the results of such research for the benefit of the public. In bringing together all those engaged in providing vascular laboratory services, the SVT now functions as the national scientific and educational society for Clinical Vascular Scientists working in Great Britain and Ireland.

Numbering around 350, the SVT has a fairly diverse membership comprising Clinical Vascular Scientists, Vascular Technologists, Sonographers, Radiographers, Clinical Scientists, Clinical Physiologists, Nurses, Radiologists and Vascular Surgeons. Essentially, our main role is to perform non-invasive vascular ultrasound services covering a wide range of vascular disorders.

Two study days are run each year: a basic level course in spring and an advanced level day in early autumn. Typically, expert lecturers provide details on the clinical and technical aspects of ultrasound assessment, while leading manufacturers bring latest demonstration ultrasound systems allowing delegates to gain invaluable ‘hands-on’ experience.

The SVT Annual General Meeting is held late November in conjunction with the Vascular Society. Abstracts are presented on a variety of topics; a monetary prize being awarded by the Circulation Foundation to the best paper. In addition, two or three guest speakers provide special interest presentations. A large exhibition area of all leading equipment and technical manufacturers are also in attendance.

All members receive quarterly newsletters featuring articles on topical professional issues, case studies, research reviews, latest developments, conference reports, vascular ultrasound course details etc. Monthly mail shots include job vacancies, latest news items and any further information as required.

The Society has a major role in education and training. In association with the Institute of Physics and Engineering in Medicine, the SVT have published six volumes of Vascular Laboratory Protocols detailing anatomy, clinical presentation, technical theory and practical guidelines for all aspects of non-invasive vascular assessments.

Additionally, the Society has its own accreditation programme. Basic accreditation is obtained through clinical experience; while full accreditation is gained through clinical experience, written and practical examinations. Full accreditation is well-recognised by employers and maintained by following the SVT Continuing Professional Development Programme.

The Society has links with BMUS (British Medical Ultrasound Society), BSE (British Society of Echocardiography) and IPEM (Institute of Physics and Engineering in Medicine) and also has representation on the following national committees:

CASE – Consortium for Accreditation of Sonographic Education
IPS – Institute of Physiological Sciences
FHCS – Federation of Healthcare Scientists
VS – The Vascular Society
CF - Circulation Foundation
UKAS - UK Association of Sonographers

The Society is a registered charity (No. 1080367), is administered centrally by the offices of the Vascular Society and managed by an elected Executive Committee, Education and Professional Standards Sub-Committee.
